The Diplomat was turned over to the San Jose Police Historical Society in September of 2003 with less than 77,000 miles on the odometer.  It had no police equipment on it, and had been repainted as an unmarked pool car (even the wiring for the police equipment was gone replaced by a am/fm radio).  During its time as a marked unit, it was a patrol vehicle, K-9 Unit (a large amount of dog hair was found under the back seat and headrest padding), and unmarked unit.  Despite the different uses of the vehicle it was in excellent condition and mechanically sound.  The vehicle was first repainted the original MOPAR "Midnight Blue" that was specific to that year of San Jose Dodge Diplomat (the vehicle had originally been painted black and white for the CHP, evidence of the original paint was seen in the fenders and door posts).

The Historical Society was fortunate enough to locate all of the correct materials to restore the vehicle back to a 1989 patrol vehicle including spotlights, correct lightbar and siren, radio, electronics, push-bar and most importantly a KDT 480 police computer.  Mr. Steve Bilycia, a police radio shop technician, spent hundreds of hours locating small items such as original fuse panels, switches, lights, and other unseen items that brought this vehicle back to life.  Every bit of this vehicle is 100% accurate to the day that it went into service.  Even the police computer works!  Many thanks to those officers and city employees who spent their free time working on this vehicle to bring it back to life!

When the CHP began using the 1989 Ford Crown Victoria, the state offered the City of San Jose the remaining non-issued Dodges they had in their reserve fleet.  The city purchased the vehicle from the state on 12-24-1989 and the vehicle was issued vehicle number 99769.  The Diplomat entered active service with the San Jose Police Department on 3-23-1990 and was retired in June 2003.

This 1989 Dodge Diplomat was originally purchased by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).  When purchased on September 8, 1988 it was assigned vehicle #2790 and shipped to the Sacramento CHP to be built as a marked CHP cruiser.
